SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAMMING

Our social skills groups can benefit children who experience developmental delays which affect socialization
. Children who are medically fragile or who have aggressive behaviors may not be appropriate for this group setting.  Our program model focuses on appropriate social communication.  The children must go through their peers to participate in an activity.  We incorporate a combined approach from the fields of Occupational Therapy (fine/gross/sensory based activities), Speech Pathology (language based program), Behavioral Therapy (motivation is key element), and Music (musical fun/games).  Group Leaders are supported by a staff of trained assistants in a high staff to child ratio.  (typically 2:1).  Each minute is spent facilitating appropriate interactions among the children.  Our social skills groups include activities that are programmed and structured based on the specific children that are placed in the group.

Key Elements:
  • Appropriate placement considers both age and skill level
  • Individualized programming
  • Guided interactions with typical peers
  • Collaboration of trained professionals
  • Fun and reinforcing activities
  • Spontaneous interactions
  • Spontaneous eye contact
  • Following directions (during game/craft) from a peer
  • Asking a peer questions

  • Small learning groups
  • Appropriate interactive outdoor/indoor social games

At Child’s Play we believe in strong parent to staff collaboration.  For this reason, we offer scheduled parent conferences/trainings.  This provides you the opportunity to observe your child in session and discuss the strategies and set goals for continued effective programming.
